[requests] Christmas Fic Request Post
~Christmas Fic Request Post~
2011 version!

What is it?
As a way to do something nice for my fandom friends and keep up with the Christmas spirit, I open up a request post for Christmas fics to be used as presents for, well, you guys. Because who doesn't like having fic written for them?

How It Works
You can request anything providing I'm familiar with the material, and I'll attempt to write it before or on Christmas. This gives you a little more than a month to give me a request and for me to write it. It can be a pairing, a character... A scene. What have you. You have a choice with everything except word count. How long it is is determined by me.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows what fandoms I [used to] write for--you can find them on my page or just by browsing the tags on sailorvfan10 (or even at deardisclaimer). I'm pretty sure that those of you who follow my LJ also know what fandoms I currently write for, and what series I'm familiar with. For example, though I don't write for Slayers, I could write fic for it if you requested it.

So! Instead of me listing my fandoms and all that other shit and having it be all about me, why not give me a top five fandom list and what you would like to see in the fandom. For example, you put Gundam Wing my example for everything and for what you'd like to see, you put, "Story about Relena finding a stray kitten and taking it home and Heero is not pleased because it could be a spy." The suggestions can be crack or they could be serious, etc. you should know I write anything and everything. I wrote Zephiel/Roy crack ffs.

Give me five fandoms, any five fandoms, that you write for or have written for or lurk in or whatever that I am familiar with. Hell, they could be five of my fandoms. Just give me five fandoms (but this would be better if you chose fandoms that you like--see, this is the point of this exercise) and five things you'd like to see, one for each or five for each, doesn't matter. Be as vague or specific as you like, but don't give me an entire outline. Can be AU or canon compliant, have smut or none, be introspective, etc. etc. etc. just mention that. (If it's going to be canon-compliant, please tell me the timeline you'd like. Using Weiss Kreuz as an example, Person A might want a fic that's set five minutes before episode one of Kapitel where Michiru and her boyfriend are coming home from a study date. Or, using Fire Emblem 7 as an example, a fic set five minutes before the first chapter of Lyn's story about her sleeping under the stars.)

This way you get something that you will enjoy as a Christmas present. :D You are essentially giving me your wishlist and I am picking your gift from it.

So the format for your comment, if you choose to format it for my OCDish mind or ease of reading, would be like this:
1) Fandom 1
* story idea/what fic you'd like to see written here
* add up to four more if that's what you'd like to do
2) Fandom 2
* story idea
3) Fandom 3
etc, etc.

Example #1:
1) Resident Evil
* Chris/Wesker. Wesker uses handcuffs on Chris in the STARS office and then promptly leaves him to be discovered by whomever. Chris is not pleased.
* Chris/Wesker. Tentacles. That is all.

Example #2:
1) Fushigi Yuugi
* Taka/Miaka. Taka decided to try to bake a cake. Miaka gets covered in frosting. Sex on a counter. Oh, and the cake tasted fine. :D
2) Fire Emblem 7
* Modern day AU. Hector hates shoveling snow. Lyndis starts a snowball fight. Hector finds out that shovels make excellent shields in snowball fights, and also for dumping large amounts of snow on unsuspecting Sacaean females...
* Alexis and Kristy's first Christmas together.

Some Restrictions May Apply
I write everything--gen, slash, het, genderbend, kink, etc. etc. Granted there are some kinks that I do not write, so don't request anything having to do with bodily fluids (like scat and watersports). Aside from that, make it as kinky or vanilla as you want :D Feel free to get me out of my comfort zone and ask me to write outside of my normal pairings. There are few pairings I actively refuse to write, and anyone who knows me knows which ones I don't like. If in doubt, give alternate suggestions or just ask.

Void Where Prohibited
Requesting ends 14 December. Requesting has been extended to the 21st of December.

[write up/review] "All That Weiss"
Hold on tight
Title: オールザットヴァイス (All That Weiß), A collection of all Weiß stories, for all Weiß fans
Publisher: ムービック (MOVIC)
ISBN-10: 4896014758
ISBN-13: 978-4896014754
Release Date: May 2000
Pages: Around 96; there are no page numbers that I can find >.>
Language(s): Though some things are in English, the book itself is in Japanese.
Book type: Soft cover with a dust jacket a la the 20th Anniversary Fire Emblem Artbook; high quality glossy paper, which makes for difficult picture taking

What is it?
All That Weiss is basically an information book containing all sorts of information for the anime Weiss Kreuz, like profiles for Weiss, summaries of drama CDs, episode summaries, etc. etc.

So it's basically like Akaneia Chronicle. Or even the 20th anniversary Fire Emblem artbook, except with less pictures and more text and information.

Why would you want this? Because I am a geek and Weiss Kreuz is possibly my favourite anime at this point. It's super rare, even in Japan. It has Yohji. ...It even has like, a few pictures of Schwarz. Why would you, hypothetical reader, want this? Because you are like me: a Weiss Kreuz geek who likes super rare merchandise for it.

Where to find it: I got mine from eBay, specifically from this seller, who I've bought other things from and have been satisfied. I've seen it on Amazon Japan, but I don't know if any of the sellers sell internationally or not. Your best bet would probably be eBay.

Twenty-seven pictures under the cut, plus commentary.Collapse )

Ganked from everyone on my flist, pretty much.

Meme is thus:
1.) Give me a pairing (does not need to be romantic)
2.) Give me an AU setting.
3.) I will write you a three-sentence fic.

(no subject)
Just thought of this idea whilst organising my own binders of fanfiction.

"Binders of fanfiction? You keep all of your fanfiction in binders?"

Well, no, though I do have hard copies of my fanfiction because I like print copies of things. Which is why I do not own an e-reader.

I have hard copies of other people's fanfiction.

"...Why the heck would you want hardcopies of fanfiction?"

Despite websites like Wayback Machine, there are websites like that don't allow the aforementioned to archive its pages. So if an author decides to quit fandom and delete their fics and don't have them archived elsewhere, well, what the hell do you do if you loved something and want to reread it?

Basically, I save other people's fics in case they get deleted. Then I don't have to get all emo when I want to reread them and get 404 errors instead.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding this practise because, well, you have a copy of someone's fic. They don't know. You could easily hand it out to whomever you wanted and the original author wouldn't know. You could easily post it to preserve it if they happen to leave fandom forever for whatever reason. Let it be known that I do not support whatever projects are springing up about "protecting fanfiction for posterity's sake" or whatever. Basically, a community wherein you post deleted works without consent of the original author so others can find them. I don't save them for that purpose. If you want a fic and I have a copy and you'd like to read it, well, you should've saved your own.

Quite a few people save fics for the purposes of rereading them in case they get deleted or moved elsewhere because nostalgia is a strong feeling.

"So how far do these...archives go back?"

I have fics from the early 2000's. From Zelda fandom, back when I was hugely involved. From back when I lurked in Smash Brothers fandom in late 2002 and early 2003. I have a copy still of the first Marth/Roy fic I ever read ("Momentum"). I only bother doing this if I really like or enjoy a fic and don't want to lose it. I keep them in binders sorted by fandom.

I don't think it's weird to save a fic you enjoy so you can continue to do so after it gets deleted (if it ever does). I mean I don't review and say BTW I SAVED A COPY OF YOUR FIC/PRINTED OUT A COPY OF YOUR FIC SO I CAN HAVE IT ALWAYS I mean that sounds creepy. Especially since, if I really enjoy an author, I might have a decent chunk of their fanfiction saved for future enjoyment.

"Do you have an archive of your own fics?"

I do. Unfortunately. Most of it's incomplete though. The only complete series I have in hard copy is Melee Academy, and that's because I'm in the process of rewriting most of it.

"Can you tell me what fandoms you saved fics for?"
Fandoms I have in hard copy: Zelda, Fire Emblem (6 and 7), bandom RPS, Smash Brothers (Melee and Brawl), Weiss Kreuz
Fandoms I have on my thumbdrive: Fire Emblem (6, 7, and 1/3/11/12), Weiss Kreuz, Gundam Wing, Smash Brothers (Melee and Brawl), misc. other fics

So yeah. I don't know who on my flist does this (if anyone does), but I do it. I don't do it for nefarious purposes, I do it because I love a fic to the point where I'd be really sad if it disappeared.

Anyone else do this?

I also have a thing for game scripts. I have two for FE11 and they're both the same script, for example. I had to print another one because the first one has no more room for me to write in the margins or anything anymore. Yes, I take notes and make note of things, insert headcanon into the margins, highlight and underline things, etc. etc. Especially for FE11. That's just what I have on the scripts--there's plenty of headcanon stuff that's in my notebook specially reserved for headcanon and the like (plus research done for fanfiction).

Sure, I could just keep a Word doc or something, but it's not the same.

Now for FE11 I just have a map with a list of places (and what chapters these countries appear in), the game scripts, a walkthrough, a list of characters, and miscellaneous other crap that has to do with FE11 that IS gives us. Like timelines.

All of my Fire Emblem game scripts fit into a standard 1 1/2" binder except for FE6, which takes up a four inch binder. It's got the 256 page game script, plus all of the supports, plus a walkthrough, plus a list of weapons/tomes/etc. and what they do, plus a map. And it had more crap, but I put all the headcanon things in my headcanon book/binder.

"What do you need a game script for? Just play the game!"
If I had to play FE11 every time I wanted to check something, or write a fic, or write meta, I think I would kill myself. From boredom. From having to replay it again for the five millionth time. If I need to look up something Marth said because I am writing a Marth meta, I'm going to look it up on my game script. I made a list of what occurs in each chapter that's important and anything noteworthy that's said. I did this with my Weiss Kreuz scripts too. This way I can look it up easier.

...There is a reason why I have FE11's game script memorised, and that's because I've referenced it many, many, many times. It's the only FE I've ever memorised. It's the only game I've memorised. My brother has Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the first three Resident Evils memorised; I have FE11. Because, you know, I write a lot of meta for it. I write fic for it. I have discussions over it. I find something new every time.

It's kind of like how I've watched Weiss Kreuz so many times I have half of Schuldig's lines memorised.

...Anyone else like game scripts?

Fire Emblem's not the only games I have game scripts for. I have scripts for the first four Resident Evils (1, 2, 3, and 4) plus Umbrella Chronicles. I might have Code Veronica's too. I don't have the REmake's or anything after UC. And I have all of Chrono Cross's, which spans two binders (two huge binders) because it's over a thousand pages long. And I have both Castlevania Sorrow games' scripts.

[meta] Because I will never stop metaing about Archanea
One thing I neglected to mention in my Archanea headcanon meta--because I have a lot of meta for this game; half of what I wrote? Not even the tip of the iceberg--was that I think Marcellus and Unnamed Brother are twins. (And before you go, "OH WHO THE HELL THINKS THAT? YOU'RE CRAZY!", I suggest you read this and then come back.)

"But Jayden," you cry, "there's no canon basis for this!"

Well, no, but if you look at things from a certain angle, it's easy to see it. See, in any other circumstances, they'd be unimportant people and no one would've given a damn about them had their awesome brother not killed some evil dragon guy and end up becoming king of some islands. And while there'd probably be some sibling rivalry between all three of them--I always pictured Anri being the oldest, then Marcellus and finally Nameless over there being dead last. Anri liked to be by himself somewhere exploring, in my mind, whereas Marcellus and Nameless didn't really get along and bickered. However, they always desired the other's company.

Yes, this happens. It happened with my brothers all the damn time.

But then suddenly Anri is king, and childless and probably brooding somewhere over the One Who Got Away and wow I just made Anri sound really angsty and a lot like that great-great nephew of his.

(That would be Marth in case you forgot.)

So who gets it next? Well, traditionally, his brother would get it. But he has two, so the oldest would get it. Which would be Marcellus.

This is where the "they're twins" thing comes in, because this means Marcellus only got to be next in line due to the fact that he came into the world minutes before Nameless did. So it was all an accident. What the hell did Marcellus do to become the next King of Altea? Nothing. Since we don't really hear much about dear ol' Marcellus, we can only assume his reign produced nothing of note except Prince Marius (Marth's grandfather). So when Anri kicked it, Marcellus got Altea, and Nameless got nothing.

Because he was born three minutes too late.

And he was going to put up a fight, because hey, he's Anri the Great's brother too, dammit! He should get something. And you know what solves things?

So maybe there was a civil skirmish of sorts, which could be the origin of Gra's hatred and jealousy towards Altea, and to put an end to it, Marcellus sighed and said, "Fine, here, have this tiny island and do whatever you want with it."

The reason Marcellus's younger brother there is "nameless" is because he's that brother no one likes to mention. I'm sure everyone has a relative they only refer to as That Uncle or The Aunt from Hell or some such. To the point where you don't know their name, just that they're the uncle that likes to go without trousers on Christmas eve after too much eggnog and a lot of karaoke sung during a marathon of A Christmas Story.

In short he's just handwaved away because no1curr.

Otherwise Altea splitting into Altea and Gra wouldn't make sense if Nameless was a couple of years younger than Marcellus, although I'm sure Nameless would still be bitter as hell, but understanding. Them being twins makes everything more complicated because, well, who gets to rule? Marcellus, because he just happened to come out first? Well screw that, I'm going to fight it!

The whole "Nameless hated Marcellus out of jealousy" thing I do believe is hinted at or mentioned by Jiol, wherein there is that similar parallel with him and Cornelius. Cornelius there gets Falchion and what does Jiol get? Nothing. Why does he get holy weapons just because he's related to Anri? So's he! All because Marcellus and Asshole With No Name couldn't get along! So what does Jiol do? He plots to kill everyone.

Well no one said it had to work, I'm sure he thought it was a great idea at the time. Never mind all he had to do was, uh, take Falchion. He should be able to use it just as much as Cornelius because they're related and why did no one think of this before?

Well there are other factors at work, such as the gods there not feeling either of them are worthy of Falchion, so they entrust it to a fourteen year old boy who just had both parents die and his sister kidnapped and his kingdom destroyed.

(Well he's sixteen-seventeen when he actually gets Falchion but work with me here.)

So Nameless's feud with Marcellus apparently went through the ages between the various rulers of Altea and Gra until Gra had a princess named Sheema go, "FUCK THIS NOISE," and surrender Gra back over to Altea, because she thought Marth was perfectly capable and I do believe she even says something like "it wasn't really [hers] to begin with". And she and Marth got along okay and whatever. And then she ran off with Samson, which pretty much gives Anri and Artemis the finger, and they live happily ever after.

"Oh Jayden, haven't you meta'd everything there ever was about Marth?"

No. This meta was inspired by mark_asphodel's Anri meta, specifically this part of it:
Anri just strikes me as a pretty closed-off individual; he walks alone, fights alone, and (in the romantic sense) dies alone. All in all, a very different sort from his great-great-nephew, who is all about team-building and unity and "we're all in this together."

Now maybe I am just misremembering things because it's been awhile, or my brain is screwed up because I've been listening to 2NE1 for the last twenty-four hours and can't help but go, "Hey, some Korean sounds like Japanese!", but there seem to be some villagers ('some' being pretty much all of Altea) who believe that Marth is the Second Coming of Anri because...well. He can wield Falchion! (But so could his father and Uncle Jiol there.) And he has blue hair! ( does his father, possibly mother, and his sister, because, well, blue hair is very dominant in his family.) And their diadems are the same! (Because royal headgear tends to be, you know, heirlooms.)

Okay so basically Marth is the Second Coming of Anri because he can wield a will-sucking sword that kills dragons and he looks a lot like Anri, which genetics tells us isn't weird at all. Sometimes looks can skip generations.

I feel they think this way because, well, they only think of Anri as a hero, in which case, yes, Marth could be the reincarnation of Anri or whatever the hell you want to call it. I'm sure Marth resents being compared to some guy who's been dead for a few generations and probably thinks I'm not Anri, dammit! (or perhaps he doesn't, who the hell knows). Maybe he doesn't.

POINT IS, Marth is constantly compared to Anri. However, if you read the quoted part from Mark's meta on Anri, Marth is completely different from his ancestor. As I mentioned, I always pictured Anri off by himself because his brothers wouldn't stop bickering and so he liked solitude. He traveled the fucking desert by himself (according to FE3 Book 2 he is the only human to have survived, so as Mark hypothesises, his comrades either didn't make it, or Anri was just that impulsive, or hell, crazy). He killed Medeus (assumedly) by himself.

Marth, meanwhile, is all about covering each other's behinds so no one dies, because death makes Marth weep (at least that's what FE12 made it sound like) because this could've ALL BEEN AVOIDED if Gharnef wasn't such a magnificent asshole. Marth even says he couldn't have done it without his comrades behind him (when he's going to retake Altea), and he tells Caeda, albeit in his really awkward way, that he couldn't have done it without her being there with him--and probably not just for the First War, but during his exile as well.

Marth doesn't run across deserts to prove himself to some stupid princess. He didn't have to do anything to impress Caeda (though he certainly impressed her by actually coming out and saying what was on his mind for once, and basically saying, "Screw you," to Nyna, although she basically screwed herself, but that's a topic for another entry), like, uh, kill dragons or anything.

So basically, Marth and Anri might be related, and they might look alike, but they're different individuals and Altea's citizens probably only see what's on the surface.

Another thing I wanted to touch upon (and probably expand upon) from Mark's Anri meta was the whole thing between Anri and Artemis sounds very, very familiar in two ways, and they involve two princesses and a prince.

Firstly, from what FE3 Book 2 tells us, Pales was taken over and everyone killed except for Princess Artemis. Which sounds like what happened to Princess Nyna. BTW, Artemis is Nyna's ancestor. (To quote Princess Zelda from "Spirit Tracks": "I suppose I'm supposed to get kidnapped. I hear it's a family trait.") She's really in love with Cartas (who eventually became king), who she gave the Fire Emblem to. Hell, she might've fallen for Anri, but whoops, that whole Fire Emblem business.

Never mind the Fire Emblem is pretty damn shady in and of itself, being "cursed"...

So Artemis goes into hiding/exile because hey, she likes her head right where it is, thank you. Remember that, at this point, Altea is just some town in the middle of fuckville. Threats happen, the citizens say FUCK YOU to the dragons, Medeus is pwned by a cool sword

Does this sound familiar?

Intelligent Systems likes to draw parallels in the Archanea games it seems, because Artemis's family being killed off parallels Nyna's situation, and her running away from home to escape certain death parallels, well, Marth.

Of course, Marth also got the girl in the end, but despite this, his relationship with Caeda doesn't directly parallel Anri and Artemis'. You want that to turn out all right in the end? You turn to Samson and Sheema.

[meta/discussion] folklore
What sort of folktales/lore, old wives' tales, etc. etc. do you think would be in Fire Emblem?

Oh, it turns out I have some Fire Emblem things I can meta about after all.

Meta #3 - About Gharnef and corruption.Collapse )

Meta #4 - Marth can be corrupted and Medeus 'will be back' bitches.Collapse )

Okay so I am going to take up that meta month challenge thing at the urging of rethira and because all the cool people are doing it.

I decided something easy is in order, to start everything off.

Sorted by universe, which is funny because I only have two.

Long because this is my main 'verse.Collapse )

Short and sweet because I don't really play much in this universe.Collapse )

...I think that's all! :D

That's just for Fire Emblem too.

[manga review] Scryed vol 1
Scryed, Book 1Scryed, Book 1 by YASUNARI TODA

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Overall, a good read. The artwork is nice, but I kind of like the anime art more. The story deviates from the anime in places as well, leading to cases where the story is drastically different. However, (something that's good for me) there is more Ryuhou, who I find to be an intriguing character, though I can't say I have a character I dislike. Whereas the anime tended to focus just a little more on Kazuma, the manga has a more even balance between HOLY and Kazuma and co.

Whereas a lot of manga can be read as a substitute or a companion to an anime series, Scryed is one of those cases where the manga and anime differ so much, both in storyline and even characters, that at first it's a little jarring and something that needs to be gotten used to. I would recommend reading the manga first, mostly because it's only five volumes long (the anime is 25 episodes at a half hour each).

Overall I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi manga. The plot and the whole thing about Alters? Interesting in and of itself, enough to explore through this manga.

[writing meta] That Pesky Author/Character Divide
What is the author/character divide?
It's basically that invisible barrier that keeps you and the character separate so what you think, feel, and react to does not get in the way of what the character thinks, feels, and reacts. Depending on how 'close' (i.e. how much you relate) to a character you are is how wide the divide is. The thinner it is, the more careful you have to be to keep yourself separate from the character(s) you're writing.

What I have noticed at times in fanfiction is this: Sometimes people get really carried away when they relate to a character, to the point where they break that wall that separates you from the character. So you don't know if you're writing how the CHARACTER would react or how YOU would personally react.

I don't want to read about you, I want to read about the character. If I want to read about how you feel, think, etc. then I will read your Livejournal. I am reading fic about Marth because I want to read about him, not about you speaking through him.

It's no secret that I can relate to Marth. It's probably not a good thing that I can, even. We both like to 'suffer with a smile' and our lives have largely been planned by other people (until recently for me, when I basically told everyone to fuck off). Marth and I have faced different hardships, but the psychological issues are largely the same. The divide between him and I is extremely thin, so it'd be easy for me to unconsciously, you know, speak through him. My problem is more me getting extremely entrenched in a character's emotions, but anyway.

Marth is not me, and I am not Marth, however. Marth does not react the same way I do, he does not think the same things I do, and he doesn't feel the same I do. First of all, I would have slit Jiol's throat for what he did to my country, right then and there in the Prologue. Yeah, fuck you, I'd say. I hope you burn in Hell. Marth could have, for all I know, thought this, but he did not slit Jiol's throat in the Prologue anyway or tell him to go fuck himself. His reaction his father's death was the complete opposite of mine--my reaction to my father's death was more like his reaction to Liza's.

There is a difference between using life experiences--"writing what you know"--and changing them to suit a character, and writing about your life experiences and changing the character so it fits. The character should be writing through you, you should not be writing through them.

Sometimes authors become attached to their darlings to the point where that divide disappears sometimes. I do not want to read about you, I want to read about the character.

A writer does put a piece of themselves into everything they write. But they shouldn't throw all of themselves into whatever they are writing. I should still recognise, say, Lyndis as being Lyndis, Marth being Marth, Ike being Ike, etc. etc. instead of Marth being just an extension of whoever's writing him at the moment. Marth is his own person, he is not you.

Sometimes you need to remember this.
